A Diary of Transition: The Testimony of the High Magistrate Salvatore Messina (1943-1945) The unpublished diary of a high magistrate, Salvatore Messina, during the Italian transition is the subject of this essay. It is a highly relevant archival source to understand the judicial world of the Court of Cassation from the inside, but also the relationship between the judiciary and politics. Old and new protagonists of the public scene are described as they attempted to cope with the significant and tragic events that occurred in Italy and around the world between 1943 and 1945. All this is seen mainly from the judge's point of view and considering historiography.
